Meet Our Team : Ron Stumpfel

Ron was born on June 18, 1941 to Austrian – German parents, just months prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States involvement in World War 2. He grew up in the Govans neighborhood in Baltimore City. Ron was a 1st class Boy Scout, water and boat enthusiast, and hydroplane racer on the Magothy River. After moving with his family to the Northwood area of the city, he played left field (sandlot little league baseball) and running back (sandlot football age 14 – 17) for the Northwood Allstars. Ron was graduated from Baltimore City High school where he lettered in junior varsity track and field ,football ,and varsity middle weight wrestling, as well as inter-mural sports. Ron holds an advanced brown belt in Tae Kwon Do martial arts.

Ron volunteered for the Army Reserve and after basic training and advanced M.O.S. and combat training he was assigned to the 326th Reserve Ordnance Group as a supply specialist in Baltimore, Maryland. After nine months, while at summer training with his unit in Virginia, his entire unit was activated and was shipped out to serve in the Republic of South Vietnam. He attained the field rank of Sergeant E-5,served as a door gunner on various Huey UH-1 helicopters, stationed at Bien Hoa and Da Nang South Vietnam, served in country 1963 and 1964 and was wounded by a mortar round during a sapper attack. Ron is a wounded combat veteran with Purple Heart and other Vietnam and U.S. service medals. After serving for seven years in the military (active and ready reserve) he retired with an Honorable Discharge.

Ron holds a B.S. degree in Industrial / Business Management from the University of Baltimore and an A.A. degree in Accounting from Essex Community College. He has worked for Esskay Meat Products, Food Fair Grocery Store, Fidelity and Deposit Insurance Company, American National Can Corporation and is presently employed by Baltimore County Public Schools as a Supervisor /Chief Engineer for Building Operations south east area.

Some of his interests and activities include whitewater kayaking, equestrian hunter jumping, accelerated freefall skydiving, camping, hiking, search and rescue (So THAT OTHERS MAY LIVE) and his 2 Labradors Retrievers (Shilo and Kody). Ron is happily married to his beautiful wife Donna Stumpfel (MDRD Handler), has 5 children and 2 grandchildren. Because MDRD only works with German Shepherds(the best scent dog breed)and not Labs, Ron has volunteered to work as Base Camp Operations Support trainee, escort, and victim for SAR field training. He is also ready, willing, and able to answer the call for any emergency, disaster, or search and rescue! Ron, his better half Donna and 2 children reside in Carney, Maryland.
