Meet Our Team : Mike Calkins
Position : K9 Handler
K9(s) : Gracie
Michael Calkins is the only scent discriminant trailing dog handler in Mason-Dixon Rescue Dogs at this time. His puppy's name is Gracie, and she is a 2 year old Redbone Coonhound that loves to play and find people. Unlike the other dogs on the team that are air scent dogs, Gracie can take a person's smell from a shoe, car, cup or any other item and trail that specific scent of the person in the woods, field, and towns, finding that person that has that smell. Gracie is still in training but is doing well and loves the game of finding people. Mike joined MDRD in November '08 and has loved every minute. Growing up in northern PA, he spent most of his childhood in the woods playing cops and robbers or trying to get lost in scouting exercises. Mike is currently a SarTech III and is working on fulfilling requirements to become a qualified escort for searches. He and Gracie are also working toward testing and becoming operational in 2009.
